Mi Frida- Jay GatsbyFor this project we were required to pick a person of our choice to represent and remake one of Frida Khalo's paintings. We worked on writing three paragraphs, one describing who our Frida was, another explained what they were wearing and why, and the third explains what object is in the picture and what that object symbolizes. During the process of writing the paragraphs, we created a piece of art that was similar to any of Frida Khalo's work.
I think Frida Khalo painted so many auto-biographical paintings of herself, because she was lonely in her life. She faced a lot of obstacles and pain in her life, most of which she could never escape from and I think painting herself was her way of trying to find herself in whatever situation she was in and expressing what she was going through by painting it. I think that my image came out pretty well. Considering that art is something I have never really been strong at, my picture shows what it is suppose to and I tried to give it interesting colors and I tried to make it as clean as possible using pastel. I did end up with the image I thought I was going to when I made my project outline, I had a vision from the start and I stuck with it the entire time in order to keep a clear focus. If I were to do this project again, I would probably not use pastels when coloring it, they ended up being pretty messy, and not the look I was going for. I would also use a different Frida painting in order to really get the message across that I am trying to portray Frida Khalo. |
Dia de Los Muertos
For Dia de los Muertos we were required to illustrate and write a profile of ourselves as skeletons. We could either draw or cut out a skeleton and make it our own, to represent the beauty and art that is celebrated with day of the dead. The profile aimed to explain things you enjoy and a little bit about your family and life as a skeleton. This project incorporated the beauty of life and death.
Reflection:
I learned that Dia de los muertos is a day in which the Mexican citizens celebrate there loved ones that have deceased. Dia de los muertos is a celebration of the dead rather than being a time of mourning. The Mexican culture accepts death and welcomes it instead of fearing it. They make death beautiful and decorate skulls to express the celebration.
My skeleton reflected me by portraying the things I love in life. The two skeletons laughing on the top of the of the page represent the love for my friends and family. The volleyball in the center of my flower is showing the sport I play, and the background covered with flowers symbolizes the joy of life and the precious beauty of it. The sun and moon embody that every hour of the night an day is a miracle and we should rejoice everyday.
I am proud of the outcome of my drawing. I thought it depicted myself well and incorporated the things that make me, me. My drawing took time, detail, and refinement but I persevered and was able to complete successful work.
This part of this project that was difficult for me was the writing portion. I struggled with the verb conjugations and the masculine and feminine sections of the profile. I also struggled with pronunciation and smoothly presenting my profile.
Next time, I would write an additional paragraph about my life as a skeleton as well as a more refined version of the writing piece. Next time I would rehearse and make sure I had all the words pronounced correctly.
